In fact, all the national specialists of urban mysteries, notably Stephen Knight, David L. Pike and Paul Erickson, have shown that the works produced according to this matrix of urban mysteries often characterize themselves as much by their differences with the source novel as by their similarities. Furthermore, these divergences generally increase over time, as the matrix is used to describe identities that differ deeply because they are linked to the history of each nation, and to each societys make-up ethnic, social, gendered, and linguistic, as well as to its political and economic development. Above all, the matrix of urban mysteries undergoes mutation because of its contact with the local literary environment owing to local literary history, practiced genres, social development, varying modes and qualities of media technologies. Quite pragmatically, observing and understanding the transfer of the urban mysteries matrix would require an encyclopedic knowledge of history, as well as of the literary histories of the source and target countries. Even the simple question of determining the textual corpus is problematic, in that one is gathering tens of thousands of novels on a worldwide scale, a project made all the more difficult given that the titular paradigms mutate from country to country. At the same time, however, as prior works on cultural transfers have shown, for example those of Michel Espagne and Pascale Casanova in France, such international studies are absolutely necessary, and often highlight not only national particularities, but also international cultural and political hegemonies. In the case of the relations between France and the United States, such study is all the more significant in that the relation is hardly one-sided. In a century of urban mysteries one even sees cultural inversion and polarization. If, through the popular urban novel of the 1840s, Paris manages to have an instigating role we will undoubtedly put that point sharply into perspective at the beginning of the twentieth century, with the globalization of American cinema the United States becomes the dominant cultural system, although I will also highlight moments of resistance and differentiation. From the beginning of the nineteenth century, such cultural transfers thus include and unfold a few complex phenomena, such as the processes of adaptation and translation, the hybridization of the imported matrix with systems of local reception and serialization, and the transfer of textual mysteries into new print and visual media. Globally, such migrating phenomena often underscore significant misunderstandings or deafness, which lead to apparent misinterpretations, but in fact, promoted hybridized forms of re-readings. The 2007 Manifesto calls for holding clients responsible. The vague language is due to the fact that such measures remain controversial in the Socialist Party. In April 2006, Senator attempted to introduce a private bill to repeal the Sarkozy law, arguing that it had been ineffective, and turned victims into criminals. The framework was very similar to the 2001 Deryck report, depicting prostitution as violence rather than law and order, and seeking punishment of exploiters, but also measures for prevention and support. No romance here but that of fact, which has truly been said to be more startling than any fiction: which fascinates as no production of the novelists fancy can, because we know it to be true, and which we remember long after the creations of genius, the fanciful children of the most brilliant inventions, are forgotten. Buntline le précise encore dans sa préface: Therefore, though this book bears the title of a novel, it is written with the ink of truth and deserves the name of a history more than that of a romance.
